I’ve been hooked on the program since it featured 16 episodes of David Chang in Season 1 (check out Dave and Rene Redzepi above). I was a little bit apprehensive with a pair of new chefs becoming the focus of the program, but I have to say that I’ve really enjoyed Sean Brock and April Bloomfield especially.
Perhaps it’s because I had no idea who April was before watching, but meeting a new chef with a unique back story, perspective and cuisine has been fascinating. Like Chang and Brock, she has terrific access to some amazing people in the food world and approaches every episode with a kid-in-candy-store energy that sucks you into everything she’s saying. It helps that she turns out some mouthwatering food every few minutes.
I was also really pleased to learn that she’s the chef behind four restaurants in my back yard (do people say that in NY?), all of which I’ve yet to visit: The Spotted Pig, The Breslin, John Dory Oyster Bar, Salvation Taco. I think I’ll make a point of hitting a few of these in short order.
If you already knew all of the above and I’ve informed you of nothing, let’s just agree that this season has been awesome and a welcome introduction to two new worlds we’re very fortunate to have seen.
This season has only two more episodes left. You can check them out for a limited time on PBS’ site here.
